The second noble truth of Buddhism says that “Desire is the root of all suffering.”
Desiring a certain outcome can easily slip into an expectation, so it follows that we should pay close attention to our expectations. If our aspirations become expectations we become bound to an unhappy life.
Lowering expectations, like all those should’s and could’s prevents these demands causing us inevitable hurt. We would all do well to practice replacing our expectations of others and life with simply treasuring what there actually is in our lives.
